Alternative council tax reduction

Known as Second Adult rebate prior to 1 April 2013, this help is only available for people who have reached the qualifying age for state pension credit and have a council tax liability.

If a liable person is classed as a single adult for council tax purposes, has reached the qualifying age for state pension credit and they have other adults living in their home, it may be possible for them to get alternative council tax reduction.

Alternative council tax reduction is based on the income of all the other adults living in the household and may be awarded if they are on low incomes. The maximum alternative council tax reduction that can be awarded is 25 per cent of the council tax liability.

The person who pays the council tax bill must still apply for alternative reduction and supply evidence of the income of any other adults who live in their home.
