Parenting courses

Children don’t come with an instruction manual so when it comes to parenting, how do you know what’s best and what works? In Hull we believe that 'every parent matters' and recognise that bringing up children is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Parents do a fantastic job, but there are times when some extra support may be needed. As part of the support available to parents in Hull we offer courses to help.

Family Links Nurturing

10 weeks, 2 hours per week

The parenting puzzle – a toolkit of useful ideas to help you enjoy family life. Helps parents and children understand and deal with behaviour, improve relationships at home and in school, develop confidence and self esteem.

This course is for adults only and suitable for parents and carers of children under the age of 13.

Triple P

8 weeks, 2 hours per week

Take the guesswork out of parenting, meet other parents and find new simple and practical strategies to help you confidently manage your child’s behaviour, prevent problems developing and build strong, healthy relationships.

This course is for adults only and suitable for parents and carers of children aged 18 months to 11 years old.

Teen Triple P

8 weeks, 2 hours per week

Triple P especially for parents of teenagers.

Take the guesswork out of parenting, meet other parents and find new simple and practical strategies to help you confidently manage your child’s behaviour, prevent problems developing and build strong, healthy relationships.

This course is for adults only and suitable for parents and carers of children aged 10 - 17 years old.

Stepping Stones Triple P

10 weeks, 2 hours per week

Triple P for the needs of families who have a child with a disability or additional need, such as ADHD and Autism.

This course is for adults only and suitable for parents and carers of children under the age of 12.

Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities (SFSC)

13 weeks, 4 hours per week

Meet other parents, get help to make sure your voice is heard and information and strategies to help and support with the challenges in raising happy and successful children. 

This course is for adults only and suitable for parents and carers of children aged 3 - 18 years old.

Strengthening Families 10 - 14 (UK)

7 weeks, 2.5 hours per week

Helps you prepare for the teenage years and build stronger relationships with your child, focuses on behavioural problems in adolescence, including alcohol and drug use.

This course is suitable for parents and carers of children aged 10 - 14 years of age and children aged 10 - 14 years old.

Supported Separated Families (SSF) 

4 weeks, 2.5 hours per week

An introduction to parenting for parents who are not currently having contact with their children. The group is a supportive environment for parents and includes parenting strategies, child development and contact. The programme includes a taste of some of the other parenting programmes available and parents can be signposted to the other programmes when appropriate.

If you are struggling with your child’s behaviour or need support then come for a chat at one of our parenting pop ins. Please telephone to check the pop in is going ahead before you set off.

SMILE Group (Self Motivating Including Laughter and Enjoyment)

Come and join in and have fun. Meet new people and make new friends in a welcoming environment. Get involved with games and craft activities. For young people around eight to 12 years old. Self esteem groups for young people run by young people aimed at boosting confidence.

HENRY Programme (Health Exercise, Nutrition for the really Young)

8 weeks, 2 - 2.5 hours per week

HENRY is a unique and highly successful intervention to protect young children from the physical and emotional consequence of obesity. HENRY works because of its holistic approach, recognising that emotional wellbeing and confidence, responsive parenting are just as important for a healthy lifestyle as nutrition and activity. It is the only evidence based intervention that enables a good start for babies and young children by bringing together three key elements -

  • information about food and activity - to give babies and young children a good start and help the whole family to adopt a healthier lifestyle
  • parenting skills - helping parents develop the confidence and skills to support healthy lifestyles and emotional wellbeing within the family
  • behaviour change - using solution focused as part of a strength based partnership approach to help families change old habits and achieve their goals
