School governor development, training and support

School governor development, training and support is delivered through -

  • a comprehensive induction programme for new governors through attendance at core courses
  • access, free of charge, for governors to the core courses provided each term
  • provision of centrally held development/training courses
  • access, free of charge, to a central resource library - including books, videos and cassettes
  • provision of area-specific governor support leaflets
  • where appropriate, governor role specific sessions

Our services are delivered on a contractual basis by a school service agreement (SSA). An overview of what services we provide and the SSA for school governor support, including charges, are available to download below -

Development and training

Governor training and development is important. It benefits both the school and individual governors and can help to develop effective teamwork. Governors are encouraged to undertake training to further their individual interest within the governing body and the work of the governing body as a whole.

Whilst not compulsory, training is encouraged for all governors however experienced. It enables individuals to improve their effectiveness in the role and to keep abreast of developments that may affect their schools and role as governors. There is a wide range of training and support available for governors and each governing body should consider its needs and how training can help it to meet those needs.

Clerking support

The role of the clerk is to help the governing body to be more effective by providing administration services and procedural advice. An effective clerk is an invaluable resource enabling the governing body to concentrate on its key strategic role of school improvement.

We ensure effective support through -

  • the provision of fully trained clerks
  • all clerks possessing a good understanding of the different roles of governing bodies and headteachers
  • clerks possessing a good understanding, awareness, appreciation and the ability to advise on governing body procedures, education legislation, guidance and legal requirements
  • clerks possessing highly developed literacy skills in order to produce concise minutes as legal records of meetings
