Registering a food business

If you are starting a new food business you must register your premises with us at least 28 days before opening. Registration is free.

Who needs to register their business

Registration applies to most types of food business, including catering businesses run from home and mobile or temporary premises, such as stalls and vans. If you use two or more premises, you will need to register all of them.

If your food premises is used by several catering businesses (for example, a conference centre), the person who allows the premises to be used for this purpose is responsible for registering them.

If there is a change of proprietor, the nature of the business changes, or if there is a change of the address, you will need to complete the food business registration form again.

Who needs to have their business approved

You need to apply for your business to be approved rather than registered if you use any of the following products of animal origin -

  • minced meat or meat preparations
  • mechanically separated meat
  • meat products
  • live bivalve mollusks (shellfish) or fishery products
  • raw milk or dairy products
  • eggs (not primary production) or egg products
  • frog’s legs and snails
  • rendered animal fats and greaves
  • treated stomachs, bladders and intestines
  • gelatine
  • collagene
