Bookstart

If you are a parent or carer of a baby or young child, the Bookstart scheme can help to encourage your child develop a life long love for books.

Bookstart provides two book packs. The first is the Bookstart baby bag for children aged 6 - 12 months old, which is generally handed out through your health visitor. The second is called the Treasure bag and this is available for children aged three and four years. They are available from your health visitor, any library branch, nurseries, pre-schools, children’s centres and registered childminders.

If your child is blind or partially sighted and aged four or under, a free Booktouch pack containing specially chosen 'touch and feel' books is available from your health visitor upon request.

If your child is deaf and aged four or under, a free Bookshine pack containing a 'touch and feel' book and a nursery rhyme book featuring British Sign Language (BSL) signs is available from your health visitor upon request.

Children under five years old can also join in the 'Bookstart Bear Club'. This reading incentive rewards your child with a stamp every time they visit one of our libraries. For every six stamps collected, your child will receive a certificate. There are 10 certificates in total and once they have completed all 10 they will receive a free book.
