Air monitoring

We review the air quality using sophisticated monitoring stations which use supplemented diffusion tubes. We also use computer modelling to predict the future levels of pollutants.

Monitoring stations
The council operates two monitoring stations of its own, one of which monitors pollution from passing traffic and one of which monitors background levels of pollution in the urban area. We also maintain a monitoring station on Freetown Way on behalf of central government.

Myton - our urban roadside monitoring station at the Myton centre, William Street, was sited in May 2001 and it measures -

  • ozone (O3)
  • carbon monoxide (CO)
  • sulphur dioxide (SO2)
  • particulate matter smaller than 10 microns (PM10)
  • oxides of nitrogen NOx (NO and NO2)

Golf centre - Our urban background monitoring station at the Hull Golf Centre, National Avenue, was sited in November 2004 and it measures -

  • sulphur dioxide (SO2)
  • particulate matter smaller than 10 microns (PM10)
  • oxides of nitrogen NOx (NO and NO2)

The government's urban monitoring station is in Francis Street, Hull, was sited in November 2002 and it measures -

  • ozone (O3)
  • carbon monoxide (CO)
  • sulphur dioxide (SO2)
  • particulate matter smaller than 10 microns (PM10)
  • oxides of nitrogen NOx (NO and NO2)

We make regular reports and assess data to see if it meets the objectives in the Air Quality Regulations 2000.

Air quality reports
We produce and hold a number of reports dating back to 1999. The reports dated 1999 - 2003 are not available electronically. The rest of the reports can be downloaded below.

Those not available electronically are  -

  • January 1999 - Stage one review and assessment to screen out sources that have no impact
  • December 2000 - Stage one and two review and assessment looks at sources not screened out in part one
  • May 2003 - Update and screening assessment revisits the previous report and detail any changes and update data
