Air quality management

It is our duty to monitor and review air quality in Hull as laid out in The Environment Act 1995 (part five).

Find out more about air monitoring

We review and assess air quality to determine if Hull will continue to meet the government’s national air quality objectives.

Air quality management area
We declared an air quality management area in 2005 after we identified that locations adjacent to the A63 trunk road exceed the government’s annual average nitrogen dioxide levels.

We have since carried out more detailed assessment of air quality within the area including research into the sources of nitrogen dioxide which have helped us to form our air quality action plan.

Action plan
The action plan aims to show how we can use existing powers and how we can work with other organisations to achieve the air quality objectives which aim to minimise the effects of pollution on human health.

Learn more about the action plan

The plan looks at measures that can address problems with Nitrogen Dioxide, ensure the continuation of the existing low levels of other pollutants and improve of air quality across the whole of the city.
