Microchipping services available for cats and dogs

What is microchipping

This is a quick, simple and painless procedure that can be done to any dog or cat over the age of 12 weeks. A microchip which is permanent is inserted under the skin on the back of the neck and contains a unique number. The owner’s details are recorded on a national database and matched to that unique number.

Organisations such as the council, vets and the RSPCA have a scanner, that when passed over the dog or cat can detect if a chip is present. The scanner displays the number of the chip enabling the owner to be traced and the dog or cat to be returned.

Microchipping surgeries for dogs

We hold regular microchipping surgeries where the cost for microchipping your dog is £7 to cover the cost of the microchip. No appointment is necessary - just turn up.

We regret we are unable to microchip cats during our surgeries as these events are normally held in an open field and are not secure.

Home microchipping service

Our animal wardens provide a home microchipping service which is just £15 for a dog or cat.

Appointments can be booked Monday to Friday - 9am to 4pm.

If you would like your dog or cat microchipped at home, or for more information about this service, please contact us on 01482 300 300 or public.protection@hullcc.gov.uk

Maintaining registered details

Once your dog or cat is microchipped, you must keep the registration details up to date. This includes changes to -

  • address
  • telephone number
  • owner

It is important that this information is maintained to make sure your pet is returned if it is lost. If your dog is considered as a stray and taken to our kennels you may have to pay a statutory fee.

You can update the registered details by contacting one of the following chip databases (make sure you have the chip number)  -

  • Petlog - 0844 4633 0999
  • Anibase - 0844 423 1235
  • Pettrac - 0800 652 8977

If you do not know the chip number you can -

  • contact the animal wardens on 01482 300 300
  • email public.protection@hullcc.gov.uk
  • visit a local veterinary practice or rescue centre who can scan your pet
