Archaeological services

Through the Humber Archaeology Partnership we provide a a wide range of Archaeological services.

We hold information on archaeological sites and finds within Hull and the East Riding which is jointly funded by Hull City Council and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. 

We also run Humber Field Archaeology one of the leading archaeological contracting organisations within this area which is self-financing.

Humber Sites and Monuments Record

We use the record to give advice to -

  • local Planning Authorities on the impact of development on the historic environment.
  • developers on the archaeological implications of development
  • farmers and farming advisory groups on land management schemes

We also give advice on -

  • non-planning related development schemes such as utility applications, road schemes, pipelines, quarries
  • removal of hedgerows within our landscape
  • implications of tree planting on the archaeological resource
  • management and policy for the protection of archaeological sites and landscapes
  • Historic Landscape Characterisation

We also provide -

  • maintenance and enhancement of the Sites and Monuments Record of all archaeological sites and finds within the area
  • professional service for the provision of information on the archaeological resource
  • public consultation and access to the archaeological record
  • production of information and sales of publications about the archaeology of the area.
  • Liaison on archaeological issues with national and local bodies, such as English Heritage, DEFRA, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

We also -

  • offer talks to local societies and educational establishments on the archaeology of the area
  • promote of  the local archaeology as a resource for education and enjoyment
  • comment on Forward Planning and Strategic planning issues that affect archaeology.

Humber Field Archaeology

We provide the follwing services which are subject to charges -

  • consultants for archaeological advice
  • archaeological contractors that undertake evaluations and excavations
  • desk-based assessments and production of Cultural Heritage chapters of Environmental Impact Assessments.
  • achaeological contractors that can arrange geophysical surveys
  • archaeological watching briefs or schemes of archaeological observation, investigation and recording.
  • earthwork surveys and other surveying programmes.
  • architectural and archaeological surveying of historic buildings
  • research on archaeological finds and artefacts
  • archaeological illustration and artists' impressions of past landscapes and buildings
  • preparation of publications and displays on archaeological sites and landscapes

Volunteers are always welcome for work on excavations and off-site finds processing. Longer term student placements are also possible on specific projects, by arrangement.

Occasional joint projects have taken place with local archaeological societies and university departments. Contact us for further details.
