Find your nearest customer service centre or information point
Please return the completed form to your local information point or customer service centre. In areas where garages are in short supply, there is a waiting list.
After you apply, your details will be added to the garage waiting list. Garages are allocated on a first come, first served basis. When a garage becomes available, we will get in touch with you. You can have a look at the garage before deciding whether to accept it or not. You will given seven working days in which to decide whether or not to accept our offer.
If you would like to accept the garage, you should contact your local information point or customer service centre to arrange an appointment where you will be asked to sign a garage tenancy agreement which lists your responsibilities as the garage tenant. It is important that you read all the conditions carefully. You will also need to bring your rent card with you. If you are not a council tenant, you will need to bring proof of identity and a utility bill. You will then receive a rent card for your garage through the post.
To apply for a council garage you must have a clear council house rent account. Generally, garages will not be given to tenants who are behind with their rent.
Council tenants will always be given preference over non council tenants.
If you are not a council tenant and you owe the council money from a previous tenancy, you will not be added to the waiting list until the debt is cleared in full.
A council tenant will not be offered a second garage if there are other tenants still waiting for a first garage.
A garage costs £7.05 per week to rent for council tenants and £8.46 per week to rent for non council tenants which includes a VAT charge. (VAT is also applied to the charge for a third and subsequent let to council tenants or leaseholder households who already rent two garages).
We are responsible for most repairs. Please telephone 01482 300 300 to report a repair.
If you are disabled you will be given priority for a garage. You will need to show us your blue badge when you apply. You can do this at any customer service centre or information point.
If you get mobility allowance, this may be enough to get you priority. If in doubt, please contact us.
If you fall behind with your rent, we reserve the right to give one week’s notice to end your garage tenancy. We will write to you to tell you we have ended your garage tenancy. If you don’t hand in the garage keys by the date shown on the letter, the garage lock may be changed - you may be charged for this.
If you have difficulties with your rent payments you should contact your neighbourhood housing officer.
You must let us know if you are moving and let us know your new address. If you are moving to another home within the same area you can still keep the garage. If you are moving to a house outside the area please check with your local customer service centre or information point on what to do.
