Weights and measures

If you deal with weights and measures in your business, we can advise you on how to comply with weights and measures law in relation to selling goods by weight, volume or capacity and the use of weighing and measuring equipment.

Further advice for retailers

If you are a retailer, you can find out more about weights and measures and other trading standards issues on the Business Companion website. The site provides impartial free information, is maintained by the Trading Standards Institute and backed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

The content is written and verified by expert contributors, but is not designed to be a replacement for professional advice and is intended only for guidance.

Testing weighing and measuring equipment

We also offer a verification service for weighing and measuring equipment which is required by law to be tested and passed before it can be used. We can verify -

  • non-automatic weighing machines
  • automatic weighing machines
  • liquid fuel measuring instruments

If you are unsure how to comply with weights and measures law in your business or want us to test your weighing or measuring equipment, contact us for guidance using the online form below. Alternatively call us on 01482 300 300 or email tradingstandardsadvicecentre@hullcc.gov.uk

It is better to talk to us before you spend money on weighing or measuring equipment products, labelling, offers, promotions and marketing.
