Taxi and private hire vehicle licences

If you want to carry passengers for reward – the reward could be money or not – using a vehicle with eight passenger seats or fewer, you will need a licence. For example, a nightclub offering a pick-up or drop-off service will need a licence, even if the passengers don’t pay a fee.

For private hire or hackney carriage work, both the driver and vehicle must be licensed.

There are two main types of taxi vehicle -

  • private hire – with this licence, you can only work from private hire operators. The fees are set by the operator and are not controlled by Hull City Council.

  • hackney carriage – with this licence you can work from the city’s taxi ranks and be hailed on the street. Hackney carriages can also work through a private hire operator. These fees are controlled by Hull City Council and are set between two different tariffs (depending on the time of the vehicle being hired).

The driver of the vehicle will need a driver’s licence, a vehicle licence and an operator’s licence if they are taking private hire bookings directly.

All licences expire on 30 June each year – no matter when they were issued.
