Health and safety legislation

If you are an employer or are self-employed, the law requires you to comply with general health and safety legislation (which applies to all working environments) and legislation that relates specifically to your industry. This includes providing essential welfare facilities for your employees.

If you are setting up a new business, everything you need to know about getting started with health and safety is available on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.

Visit the Health and Safety Executive website for information about getting started (link opens in a new window)

General legislation for all businesses

The health and safety advice for business booklet, available to download below, details the general legislative requirements you will need to comply with.

For further information about any of the general legislation and how to implement it at your business, please contact us to speak to an inspector.

Six regulations on health and safety at work
The six regulations on health and safety at work explain in detail what an employer should be doing to comply with the requirements of the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act.

The six regulations are often referred to as the ‘six pack’. Find out more about each of the six packs -

Legislation relating to your industry

Your business must also comply with legislation that relates specifically to your industry. You can find the legislation that relates to your business on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.
