Unroadworthy vehicles

If you are a motor dealer or repair vehicles, you must not supply vehicles to the public for use on the road which are in an unsafe condition.

Visit the Business Companion website for information used car sales including your responsibility for the safety and roadworthiness of the vehicle (opens in a new window)

If you are unsure how to comply with vehicle safety law in your business, contact us for guidance using the online form below. Alternatively call us on 01482 300 300 or email tradingstandardsadvicecentre@hullcc.gov.uk

Vehicle business inspections and investigations

We carry out regular inspections of vehicles on car dealer’s forecourts. During an inspection we can provide you with advice about how your business can be legally compliant, particularly with the Road Traffic Act 1988.

We investigate complaints from consumers about un-roadworthy vehicles. We do not usually give notice of an investigation.

Where practices or conditions are not satisfactory, we may be able to resolve the matter by providing advice and guidance. As far as the law allows, we will take account of the circumstances of the case and the attitude of the operator when considering action unless immediate enforcement action is necessary.
