Dangerous wild animals

Who needs a licence

Any person who keeps or proposes to keep a dangerous wild animal within the Hull boundary needs a licence.

Under Section 5 of the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, the provisions of the Act do not apply to any dangerous wild animal kept in -

  • licensed zoos
  • licensed pet shops and circuses
  • any place that is registered as an establishment within the meaning of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986

Apply for a licence

Information we need from you

The applicant must complete an application form detailing, among other things, their name, their age (licences can only be issued to persons who are 18 or over), the address of the premise where the animal is kept (or will be kept), the species and the number of each species of animal.

Unless revoked, the licence will be in force for two years* from date of issue.

*Section 2(3) of the Legislative Reform (Dangerous Wild Animals) (Licensing) Order 2010 has substituted Section 2 of the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 and such a licence now remains in force for two years.

Payment

The fee is £60 and prior to any application being granted, a satisfactory veterinary inspection report is also required. The fee for a vet's report is not included in the application fee.

Any renewal application is £60 but unless recommended by a previous veterinarian report, or for any other reason, a new vet inspection report may not be required upon renewal.
