Booking your ceremony

If you are getting married in a register office or approved premises, you will need to agree the date and time for your marriage with both the venue and the registrar who is attending to register and conduct your ceremony.

You do not have to live in Hull to get married in Hull. However if you or your partner live outside of Hull, you will need to contact the registration district in which you live to give notice.

Things to consider when planning your ceremony

Changes to the law allowing same-sex marriages

From 29 March 2014, the law has allowed for marriage ceremonies for same sex couples and from 10 December 2014, the law changed again to allow those couples already in a civil partnership the option to convert this partnesrship to a marriage.

Civil partnerships remain unchanged and are available same sex couples. Registration officers are unable to advise couples on whether to choose a marriage or civil partnership, as this is really a personal choice.

Couples not currently in a civil partnership who want to opt for a civil marriage are required to first give notice of their intention to marry. This is a different type of notice to that in relation to registering a civil partnership and as such you must be clear of your intention when attending the appointment with us. Notice can't be given more than 12 months in advance or until the venue has been decided. The minimum period between giving notice and when you can get married or register your civil partnership is 28 clear days.

Couples who have already registered their civil partnership and wish to convert this registration to a marriage won't be required to give notice.

For couples who entered into a civil partnership after 29 March 2014, or any couples who register one in the future and subsequently want to convert this to a marriage a full fee will be applicable.

The full fee for conversion at a Register Office will be £45.

Additional fees will apply in special circumstances and if a celebratory ceremony is required.
