F.S. Smith's Hull - Then and Now Exhibition of Victorian drawings at Hull Maritime Museum, 9th May to 11th September 2011

Thirty-five drawings of Hull during the Victorian period by Frederick Schultz Smith are currently on display at Hull Maritime Museum. They comprise part of a collection of over 800 drawings by the artist held within Hull Museums. Mainly created with pen and ink, they show Hull's urban landscape and Victorian ways of life in minute detail. Some are no larger than a postcard.

The collection provides us with a unique snapshot of Hull and its suburbs in an era before street photography became common. Those featured in the exhibition are displayed alongside modern photographs of the same views today, produced by Hull Museums volunteers, to reveal how much Hull has changed in more than 100 years.

We are endeavouring to raise funds towards the conservation and preservation of this significant collection. If you would like to make a donation, however small, please contact Hull Museums on 01482 613902, email museums@hullcc.gov.uk or write to Hull Museums, Queen Victoria Square, Hull, HU1 3RA.
