Corporate director - business support

Please note, applications are no longer being acccepted for the corporate director posts at Hull City Council.

Over the last 18 months, there has been a change in perception about Hull. It is a place of great opportunity, with high resident satisfaction and great potential. As an authority we have great ambition and have had a number of achievements recently, not least in our gaining an award for ‘Best Council for Frontline Services’ in 2009 by the Association for Public Service Excellence. We have also recently been shortlisted in the LGC awards in the ‘Most Improved Council’ category.

These are of course great achievements, but we know there is much to do to further improve our council and continue to provide strong services for the people of Hull. To achieve this, we must ensure the council is fit for purpose and efficient, with a truly ‘one-council’ approach and robust leadership to drive us forward.

Along with your colleagues, as corporate director of business support you will play a key leadership role, working across the authority to ensure we fulfil our ambition to improve people’s lives. This post has a broad portfolio to lead in addition to your corporate responsibilities and your challenges will be many and varied including:

  • strategic planning, monitoring and analysis of all fiscal areas of the council (including line management of the Section 151 officer)
  • legal and democratic services (including line management of the monitoring officer)
  • management of risk and the monitoring of appropriate action plans through internal and external audit processes
  • driving efficiencies through procurement and commissioning processes
  • the delivery of value for money, transactional systems and processes which underpin the delivery of all council services
  • leadership of the asset function

Key to success in this post will be your ability to keep the authority safe and evaluate risk, providing solutions rather than just seeing barriers and ensuring we have a robust organisation fit for purpose. We seek people who can focus on outcomes and how these are delivered. It is vital that you are leader with a strong set of corporate values, able to operate across the authority. This role presents the opportunity to be a central part of a newly created leadership team and the opportunity to shape the future of Hull.
