2018 Open Exhibition opens at Ferens Art Gallery - 13/02/18
Artwork selected for the 2018 Open Exhibition at Ferens Art Gallery open to the public on Saturday 17 February.

The high profile panel of judges – artist and 2017 Turner Prize Nominee Hurvin Anderson, journalist, author and chair of Hull UK City of Culture 2017 Rosie Millard OBE; and curator of 20th century art at the Courtauld Gallery, Dr Barnaby Wright – selected 310 artworks on 12 December.

The exhibition celebrates its 51st Anniversary and brings together a fascinating array of artwork including impressive paintings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, textiles and jewellery produced by local amateur and professional artists. These highlight the contribution and quality of creativity in Hull and its surrounds and the annual event remains central to the Ferens commitment to supporting and developing local artistic talent.

Artworks in the Open Exhibition can be purchased during the preview evening on 16 February and throughout the duration of the exhibition. A catalogue for £2.50 is available from the gallery.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said:

"This is a captivating exhibition that explores people's interpretation of art, offering a unique opportunity to display their submissions alongside world renowned art.
"It is fantastic for Hull that we have an annual exhibition to showcase the exceptional local and regional talent. The exhibition is always hugely successful.”

Work for the 2018 exhibition includes two striking and large metal sculptures by artist Saffron Waghorn, a sculptor from Skipsea, East Yorkshire. There are a number of photographs, paintings and textile works inspired by Hull’s buildings, landscapes and people, and we have 50 works that have been entered by students this year. One student, Marcus Zincke, has submitted three paintings on unusual objects – a skateboard, violin and a cupboard door.

Prize winners will be announced at the private view on the evening of Friday 16 February. The prizes have kindly been provided by our sponsors the Friends of the Ferens and local business BSB Architecture.

This free exhibition runs until Sunday 22 April at Ferens Art Gallery. The Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sundays 11am – 4.30pm.
