Market trader prosecuted for selling counterfeit candles - 20/07/17
A market trader from Liverpool has been found guilty of selling counterfeit Yankee Candles products.

Darren Briercliffe pleaded guilty to the possession of over 8,000 counterfeit Yankee Candle products. Mr Briercliffe was sentenced to eight weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months, together with an order for 100 hours unpaid work and costs of £1800.

On Wednesday 30 November, 2016, Trading Standards Officers from Hull City Council visited Walton Street Market, Hull and found Mr Briercliffe selling over 8,000 Yankee candle products including car air fresheners and candles. All of the stock was seized and subsequently confirmed as counterfeit by the brand holder. Mr Briercliffe was interviewed and did not deny that he was the seller of the fake Yankee Candle products.

Trevor Todd, Assistant Head of Service for Public Protection said: "It is disappointing that this market trader attempted to sell counterfeit products. The trading standards team acted swiftly to remove the excessive number of counterfeit products from this market and we are satisfied with the outcome from the prosecution."
