Gala Concert 2017 – hitting the right note - 25/04/17
Hull Ladies Choir and Hull Male Voice Choir are presenting a Gala Concert in celebration of Hull being the UK City of Culture in 2017.

These two established choirs have represented the City of Hull nationally for a joint total of 186 years. With the support from Hull City Council’s Arts Development team, the event will take place on Thursday 11 May, in the magnificent Banqueting Hall in the Guildhall, in Hull city centre, surrounded by the evidence of Hull’s culture, tradition and history.

Based on the Hull 2017 season, Roots and Routes, the programme will include songs and poetry appertaining to the Routes and Roots of the City, local historical events, achievements, occupations, geographical position and people from and associated with Hull.
A new medley of songs incorporating popular local pieces and people from Hull has been commissioned and will be sung jointly by both choirs during the event.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said: “The gala event has been made possible with support from our Arts Development team, and is a welcome contribution to the Council’s Singing City choral development initiative. We are delighted that these two choirs are coming together for this event, and that it is taking place in one of the city’s historic buildings. The Guildhall is the perfect setting for this unique performance.

Chris Lake, Chairperson of Hull Ladies Choir said: “Both Hull Ladies Choir and Hull Male Voice Choir are delighted to be presenting a joint celebration concert for Hull City of Culture 2017 as the origin and history of both choirs are firmly rooted in Hull.
“It gives us great pleasure to be staging our Gala Concert in the Guildhall amongst reminders of past Civic Dignitaries and are conscious that along with other choirs we represent the present and the future of Choral Singing in the City of Hull and the surrounding area.
“Our concert will bring to the audience reminders of the City’s diverse and heroic past in producing individuals and groups of great ability and talent throughout the centuries .We will celebrate the diversity of the local community and the spirit of the people of Hull reminding us of the years of history which has now brought us to Hull City of Culture 2017.”
Any guests who are interested in joining either choir will have the chance to find out more about singing with either one of these historical choirs.

The concert will take place on Thursday 11 May 2017, 7.30pm. Tickets are £8 and are available from Gough and Davy, Paragon Street, Hull.
