Hull City Council statement regarding Shadow Gate - 17/05/16
Hull City Council can confirm that Shadow Gate has today been rejected by planning councillors.

Garry Taylor, City Major Projects Manager said:

""Whilst the artists Tonkin Liu are obviously disappointed we respect the decision of the Planning Committee who have listened to all of the views put forward, including concerns of its location, during the consultation period.

""The commissioning of work from world-class artists is an integral part of our public realm programme and the long-term plans to make the city centre a distinctive, welcoming and fascinating place to visit.

""Tonkin Liu's vision for Shadow Gate would have created a sun-dial, highlighting key dates in the city's history in a unique way. Standing on original site of the Wilberforce Monument, it would have also provided a landmark connecting the Old Town with the new and Queen Victoria Square with Beverley Gate.

""We will continue to work with our other commissioned artists to represent the city's history, character and architecture throughout the wider public realm programme.

""Given the need to ensure that the work in this area is completed on schedule, we are not proposing to bring forward any further proposals for this site.""
