Companies invited to tender for city's Extra Care catering contract - 25/04/16
Hull City Council's Cabinet members have today (Monday 25 April) agreed to proceed with the tender process to deliver the catering contract for city's prestigious £80m Extra Care scheme.

The search will now begin and the successful contractor could deliver more than 80,000 wholesome meals a year across the three sites in Hull, improving the health and well-being of customers.

Residents living in the 316 apartments, which are currently under development, will have the chance to sign-up to the provision whenever they want. Seen as essential to maintaining health and independence, customers will be encouraged to choose up to three two-course nutritious balanced meals per week.
Packages are also designed to be extremely flexible, from provision of completely prepared meals, to pre-chopped and prepared ingredients, to allow people to still enjoy the freedom of cooking healthy, nutritious food for themselves.

Hot meals and snacks will be available seven-days-a-week, provided within communal eating areas within the apartment complexes, giving customers a chance to spend time together. The scheme will be incentivised, with customers receiving agreed discounts for choosing to have up to three two-course meals per week.

Alison Barker, City Adult Social Care Manager, said:

""Today's decision to progress with the tendering of the catering contract is another milestone for the scheme and we look forward to awarding this large scale contract, providing a fantastic opportunity for the successful organisation.

""The ethos of the Extra Care scheme focuses on providing support for people with care needs and maintaining independence; providing healthy meals to residents and the wider community will support this.

""Providing nutritious food is an essential part of a balanced diet, and encouraging good eating habits can help build the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.""

Delivered in the friendly environment of a café or restaurant they will encourage people to meet in a social setting, thereby reducing social isolation and fostering interaction with the local community.
